First came the CLX 64. Then 32. And after racking up multiple victories in the Grand Tours, the Worlds, and everything else, we knew our best bet was to go further, or well, to new depths. We needed to design a wheel that was a real chill killer. A wheel that had all the aerodynamic benefits of the 64 in a set that climbed like the 32, and that's where the new CLX 50 comes in.

PROPERTIES
When we set out to create the DISC CLX 50, we had clear goals: to create wheels 48 to 54 mm deep, aerodynamically optimized, ultra-wide and less than 1400 grams. This meant they would have to borrow some weight-saving techniques we developed for the CLX 32, take some aerodynamics from the CLX 64, and keep all the benefits of the disc brakes we've come to love if we were going to create what we like to call "the unicorn wheel."
Why discs? With our disc-specific tires, we get rid of the braking track to make a stronger, more impact-resistant tire. In this way, you get a specific carbon layer for the disc that optimizes stiffness, a weight as close as possible to its rim brake sisters, an incredible modulation of the brakes and power under all conditions.
Although the CLX 50 has a weight similar to that of many wheels in the "lightweight" category, aerodynamics was put at the forefront of development. With this, we jumped headlong into computer modeling of Computational Fluid Dynamics to come up with various tire shapes that could make the CLX 50 as fast and light as possible. It took us a while, but we reduced the shape of the tire to three contenders that were then CNC machined into tires, built into wheels, and put into the Wind Tunnel. In the tunnel, we tested each wheel, ours and the competition's, with a 24CC tyre (measuring 26CC), as the tyres can drastically affect testing. We chose a modern width tire to design our rims, because not only do they allow for lower tire pressure (resulting in more comfort and less rolling resistance), but they are also just as aerodynamically efficient when mounted with the right rim width.
After finding the optimized rim shape that best supported our slender weight requirements, we opted to mount the tires to our Aero Flange (AF) hub, via the 24 spokes DT Swiss Aerolite, which features the legendary CeramicSpeed bearings. This way you get a complete and superior wheel system, not just a fast rim. And at the end of the day, all this equates to a 50mm deep, 770-gram rear wheel that's not only significantly lighter than the competition's similar profile wheel, but is also faster in every test imaginable than every wheel in its category.
